At Golden State Great Pyrenees Rescue & Sanctuary, we are dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGDs)—with a special focus on Great Pyrenees. Unlike many rescues, we provide each dog with a minimum of 30 days in our care before making any placement decisions. This time is crucial: it allows for thorough health checks, emotional decompression, and true behavioral evaluation—both with people and with livestock.
We believe that rescue isn’t just about saving lives—it’s about restoring purpose.
Our Commitment
We are a 24/7, hands-on operation run primarily by our CEO and a board member, with the full support of a passionate and experienced volunteer board. We don't use boarding facilities we have our own facility plus the best fosters. Together, we provide more than just shelter—we offer each dog a path back to stability, confidence, and meaningful work.
What Sets Us Apart
-Rescue & Rehabilitation
We rescue abandoned, neglected, and at-risk LGDs and give them immediate medical care and a safe place to recover. Whether the dog comes from cruelty, surrender, or hardship, we offer structure and patience.
-A Thoughtful Intake Process
Unlike quick-turn rescues, we keep each dog a minimum of 30 days. This allows time to: ensure they are medically stable
Let them decompress emotionally
Assess their temperament and suitability as a livestock guardian
This approach leads to safer, more successful adoptions—and fewer returns.
-Adoption & Rehoming
Every dog is matched with the right environment, whether that’s a working farm or a loving home. We don’t just rehome—we place with purpose.
-Sanctuary & Lifetime Care
Some dogs cannot be rehomed due to age, illness, or emotional scars. For them, our sanctuary provides lifetime care in a safe, structured environment.
-Livestock Rescue & Real-World Training
We also rescue livestock, poultry, and waterfowl—not only to give these animals a second chance at life, but to create a purposeful, symbiotic environment for our guardian dogs.
These animals are vital to our training process, helping us assess each dog’s instincts, behavior, and potential in real-world guarding scenarios. But they offer more than training—they help sustain the health of the dogs themselves. The fresh eggs and milk from our rescued livestock provide essential nutrients that support our dogs’ recovery and long-term wellbeing.
At our sanctuary, rescue is not just about survival—it’s about rebuilding a life with purpose, contribution, and balance. Every animal here plays a part in that mission.
-Education & Advocacy
We offer workshops and digital resources to teach responsible LGD care, pet ownership, and peaceful coexistence with wildlife. Outreach is a cornerstone of our mission.
Why It Matters
Our work is rooted in the belief that every guardian dog deserves a life of dignity, purpose, and safety—whether that’s beside a flock or at the foot of someone’s bed. And every donation, every adoption, every shared story brings us one step closer to a world where these magnificent dogs are understood, valued, and protected.
Be a part of something lasting.
Adopt. Donate. Sponsor. Advocate.
Together, we protect the protectors.
