Surrenders
Compassion first, always. Sometimes life changes — and we understand. Before surrendering your Livestock Guardian Dog (LGD), please take a moment to explore the resources below. Our mission is to keep dogs with their families whenever possible, because studies show changing homes can be deeply stressful for all dogs but especially working breeds like the Great Pyrenees.
Can’t Afford to Keep Your Dog? Every state offers financial and veterinary assistance. There are also nonprofit programs and Facebook support groups for feed, vet care, and supplies. Contact us first, and we’ll do our best to connect you with resources that can help keep your dog home.
Not Enough Time? You don’t need hours every day — just 15 minutes of focused time with your dog builds trust and happiness. That could mean quiet time on the porch, a walk, or basic training practice.
LGDs thrive on routine and connection; even short, calm interactions matter.
Behavioral Challenges? Don’t give up yet. Describe your dog’s behavior issues by email, and we’ll provide advice or refer you to a qualified LGD trainer. Many behaviors can be improved with structure and environment — surrender is the last resort.
Moving or Housing Concerns? There are growing numbers of pet-friendly apartments, condos, and rentals that accept large breeds. Ask landlords about payment plans for pet deposits — many will work with you.
New Family Member? Most Livestock Guardian Dogs bond deeply with families and are known for being gentle protectors of children. Introduce slowly, supervise early interactions, and give everyone time to adjust.
Before requesting to surrender please review how your dog was originally obtained:
From a Breeder: Most reputable breeders require that dogs be returned to them. Review your contract and contact them first.
From a Rescue: Reputable rescues include a clause to return the dog if you can no longer keep them. Contact the original rescue before reaching out to us.
Important Notice: Golden State Great Pyrenees Rescue & Sanctuary does not guarantee acceptance of any dog. We cannot accept dogs that have shown any aggression toward humans or animals, or that have bitten. Our facility is almost always at capacity, and we must prioritize safety and temperament.
Due to high volume, we only reply to accepted applications, and it may take up to 2–4 weeks for review.
Surrender Fees: We had to add surrender fees to help cover the cost of intake, care, and veterinary assessment. Financial hardship exceptions may be considered — please contact us first to discuss options.

Altered, friendly, no livestock experience: $800+
