Our Intermediate Guardian Program is designed for developing working dogs who possess strong foundational instincts but require structured, hands-on experience to become reliable partners. This program bridges the gap between raw breed traits and a seasoned ranch guardian by putting dogs through rigorous, real-world farm scenarios. This intensive program ensures that every dog graduating from our care is not just a pet, but a capable, clear-headed working asset to your ranch.

Where Our Intermediate Dogs Come From

The vast majority of dogs in our Intermediate Program come from high-kill California shelters, strays or frantic owner-surrenders. Often, these are young Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGDs) who were failed by their environment. They were bought as cute puppies by suburban owners who didn't understand the breed, or kept in city neighborhoods where their natural instinct to bark and guard created conflict. They don’t need fixing—they just need a job.

Our Strict Selection Process

We do not place every dog into our working program. Because livestock and human safety are our top priorities, every dog must pass a rigorous evaluation before being accepted into the Intermediate Program. We select based on:

Core Temperament: Assessing for baseline stability, handler focus, and an absence of unprovoked, chaotic aggression.
Instinct Evaluation: Testing for innate guardian traits versus high prey drive.
Physical Soundness: Ensuring the dog has the structural health, hips, and stamina required for a demanding ranch lifestyle.

What the Program Includes:

Once selected, dogs enter our intensive curriculum to prepare them for placement:

Intensive Multi-Species Training: Direct, supervised exposure to multiple livestock species to ensure the dog learns to bond with and respect different types of stock.
Boundary & Perimeter Work: Specialized training focused on establishing territory lines, preventing escapes, and teaching strict fence respect.
Problem Behavior Correction: Active troubleshooting and correction of common adolescent or displaced LGD behaviors, including roaming, stock chasing, and inappropriate barking.
Real Predator Pressure Exposure: Controlled, real-world exposure to environmental predators—including coyotes, birds of prey, and stray dogs—to safely develop and hone the dog's natural protective instincts.

The majority of these dogs are placed directly with producers already established on our Priority Waitlist.

Grace was abandoned in an orchard in Fresno, CA at the tender age of 5 weeks. She was found malnourished, with fleas, ticks and mange. Luckily she was found by an independent rescuer who cared for her to get her strong enough to fly to us. She has been with us since she was 7 weeks old.

She well-behaved, intelligent, and cute. She just hit her teenage phase so will need continues corrections with the livestock. the is a low barker.
