At Golden State Great Pyrenees Rescue & Sanctuary, we believe every guardian deserves the chance to become who they were meant to be.

We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, training, sanctuary, and thoughtful placement of Great Pyrenees and other livestock guardian dogs (LGDs).

These remarkable dogs were bred for centuries to think independently, protect what they love, and make decisions without being told what to do. Those same instincts that make them extraordinary guardians can also make them deeply misunderstood. Too often, LGDs are surrendered, abandoned, or end up in shelters simply for being who they are.

We believe they deserve better.

Rescue is only the beginning. Every dog who comes into our care is given time to decompress, receive necessary medical care, and show us who they really are outside the stress of a shelter or difficult past. We evaluate temperament, behavior, instincts, and individual needs before deciding what kind of future will give that dog the greatest chance to thrive. We don't believe in rushing placements. We believe in the right placements. Some of our dogs were born to work and thrive protecting livestock on farms and ranches. Others show us that their happiest future is as a beloved family companion. Some need additional rehabilitation or training before they're ready for either. And for dogs whose medical or behavioral needs make traditional adoption unrealistic, our sanctuary provides them with something just as important: A place to belong for life.

WHAT MAKES OUR RESCUE DIFFERENT

• Rescue & Rehabilitation: We rescue guardian dogs from shelters, abandonment, owner surrenders, neglect, and other difficult situations. Each dog receives the medical care, structure, patience, and time needed to begin again.

• Thoughtful Evaluation & Placement: A successful adoption isn't simply finding someone willing to take a dog. It's finding the environment where that individual dog can thrive. We take the time to understand our dogs before matching them with appropriate homes.

• Livestock Guardian Dog Training: LGDs aren't ordinary dogs, and their training shouldn't be ordinary either. Our dogs can be evaluated around livestock in real-world environments, allowing us to better understand their instincts and determine whether working life may be appropriate for them. Young and developing guardians may also receive continued training and exposure as they mature.

Sanctuary for Life

Not every rescued dog can—or should—be adopted. Dogs with significant medical, behavioral, or other special needs can remain in our care, where they are given safety, enrichment, companionship, and the dignity of a permanent home.

Livestock Rescue

Our sanctuary is also home to rescued farm animals. Beyond giving those animals a safe future of their own, our livestock provides an authentic environment where appropriate guardian dogs can be evaluated, introduced, and trained around the animals they were bred to protect.

Education & Advocacy

Saving individual dogs matters. Preventing the next surrender matters too. We educate owners, adopters, fosters, and working homes about LGD behavior, development, management, fencing, livestock introductions, and realistic expectations. Understanding these breeds can be the difference between a failed placement and a partnership that lasts a lifetime.

BECAUSE PURPOSE LOOKS DIFFERENT FOR EVERY DOG

For one Great Pyrenees, purpose may mean standing quietly among a flock of sheep under the stars. For another, it may mean sleeping beside the family they love. For another, it may simply mean spending the rest of their life somewhere safe, understood, and wanted. We don't decide what a dog should be based solely on their breed. We give them the opportunity to show us who they are. Then we help them get there.
